|The #16 Bees upset #12 seed Olmsted Falls in the opening round of the OHSAA tournament on Saturday. Medina won 50-48 in overtime on a game-winning layup with 3.4 seconds left by senior forward Madi Tata (18 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block).Earlier, senior forward Ksenia Klue tied the game 42-42 after taking a pass from Jessie Holzman and turning it into a power layup, sending the Medina fans into a frenzy and, ultimately, the Bees to an overtime period. The momentum stayed with the Bees during the extra stanza as the team got field goals from Holly Rhodes & Tata while turning up the heat defensively.
Medina’s defense held the Bulldogs to just a single field goal over the 4th & OT periods. The defense, bolstered all game by Rhodes, Holzman and Casey Midlik up top, also got a boost from Tata’s big block at the beginning of OT and play off the bench from Liz Jones, Dyamon Stockman & Clover Kaple.
Holzman, who hounded Bulldogs star player Kerri Gasper throughout the game, poured in a career-high 21 points. The sophomore small forward went 9-10 from the free throw line and racked up 7 steals, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 0 turnovers.
“‘Madi has an amazing ability to come up clutch in big moments, and Ksenia had fantastic position to get the shot that sent us to OT,” said coach Karen Kase. “Jessie has absolutely stepped up her game over the past few weeks, and was fantastic in all aspects of the game today. She and Holly led our defense, which is where it starts for us. The team believed until the final buzzer, and it was a fun tournament game to be a part of.”
Medina (11-10) will travel to Wooster next to play the seventh-seeded Generals at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb 20th.
