The Medina Boys HS Rugby Team picked up their 5th win of the 2018 season with a narrow 32-29 win over Anthony Wayne HS. After the 2-and-a-half-hour bus ride to Waterville, OH the Bees did not waste much time getting started on attack. Junior Logan Schulz touched down the first try of the match just 2 minutes in to give Medina a 5-0 lead. After a try from Anthony Wayne that tied the match at 5-5, Medina worked their way down the pitch to within 5 meters of the try-line. It was Medina’s Emanuel Gonzalez who powered his way through the defense to score a try in the corner to give the Bees a 10-5 lead. It was a short-lived lead as the Generals caught the Medina defense napping to score a converted try and reclaim the lead 12-10 with 11 minutes left in the half. Just before the half, Logan Schulz picked up his 2nd try running straight through the Anthony Wayne backline to put the Bees ahead 15-12 at the half. Medina started the 2nd half on the attack scoring 3 quick tries in the first 12 minutes in a brilliant display of un-selfish team rugby. Senior Nathan Cantoni scored the first try after taking a slick offload from Logan Schulz and out-pacing the defense the rest of the way. Just 2 minutes later it was Cantoni setting up Schulz for his 3rd try of the match. Junior Mason Juka added a conversion kick to extend the Medina lead to 27-12. Nathan Cantoni found the try zone once again after taking a pass from Sylas Depp and maneuvering his way through the defense to score a brilliant solo try to give the Bees a 32-12 lead. The Medina attack then started to fizzle as fatigue set in and Anthony Wayne started to find their rhythm in attack. The Bees survived an onslaught of 3 tries in the final 18 minutes of the match from the home side and hung on for the 32-29 win. The Bees end the regular season with a 5-3 record, securing a playoff spot in the RugbyOhio Division 2 North Region.
